Pink text is pretty. That's reason enough.

I will ONLY trade with someone who posts in the trade channel, and only in the trade channel.

This way you don't have to continually spam what you want to sell in order for people to see what you want to sell.

I also think that a new system against spammers needs to be put in place, where if you message more than a specified amount in a given time you're banned from using chat for a certain amount of time. Which will hopefully curtail the kind of spam avert.s that BogusDude mentioned:

Spammer: WTS Enchant Axe mod 20% ___________________1
Spammer: WTS Enchant Axe mod 20% ___________________2
Spammer: WTS Enchant Axe mod 20% ___________________3

Joe Bloggs: LFP for mission
Spammer: WTS Enchant Axe mod 20% ___________________6
Spammer: WTS Enchant Axe mod 20% ___________________7
Spammer: WTS Enchant Axe mod 20% ___________________8

But I don't know if these things would be possible impliment or not.
It think there should be a new trade system. Advertising thats supposed to be on trade is useually placed on all chat. Its impossible to talk to people over all chat usually because people try to sell stuff on it so much. But if everyone tryed to sell there stuff on trade there would be a sea of pink. You wouldn't be able to find what your trying to buy and people couldn't buy what your trying to sell. If there was a store or action method that happened by talking to a guy in a town it would be much easier to sell stuff.

Ragnarok has done it pretty well. The only problem is that you need to plant your character somewhere and most people don't just want to sit there all day waiting for someone to come along and see what they have.

What they need to do is have something that you can click on in your inventory window that will create a ghost of you with a little dialog box above it with the description of your "store". Then all people ahve to do is click on your ghost, like a merchant, and it will have listings of your items with prices next to them. When they buy, it will go right into storage.

Like your idea but stores have been mentioned before, the proberlems thats has been brought up with this idea is one it may lag more and two they'll be tons of spam...

They should have a Trade merchant were you click on him and it to be organised into catagorise (can't spell)
eg Sword, axe, shield etc.

You click on them and it takes you to everyones stock of every item that is being sold.

I don't think this would completely remove spam as we have alot of inpaitent players on GW but at least it would remove a big chunk of it.

Also perhaps they should add anouther chat tab maybe enable team chat to be used without a party so people can use that to find teams.

I have used the trade channel and I have bough things announced in the trade channel only. In some popular markets like Ascalon International District the trade channel is used.

I agree that if an Auction House were implemented, the trade channel might be closed.

I like the auction house idea, especially if you make it international. wouldn't that be gr8? i mean, if i want to buy something its nearly impossible, not to mention when you're trying to sell stuff. wouldn't this be fixed with an auction house, wouldn't everyone go there if they're planning on buying/selling stuff?

My solution is to force the WTB, WTT, WTS, etc chat into the Trade channel, using filtering similar to Anti-Spam filtering used by Email servers.

Then give a warning and a 5 minute mute for the first offence, second offence a 48 hour ban, third offence, a 2 week ban, fourth offence, permanent ban.

At least you get 3 shots to figure out where Shift 4 is. Personally, I'd say first offence is a 48 hour ban, second offence is a drive shooting, and a permanent ban, but some of you squishier people think that's a little harsh.

Local chat is for finding a group, asking questions (not do you WTB, WTT, WTS such and such…?), etc.

What's the problem? Anet got their money from the game sale, and we get rid of the people spamming, grieving, annoying, and abusing the system.

I turn off the Trade channel when I am not interested, I turn it on when I’m looking for something. If I didn’t want to see it in Trade, what makes you think I want to see it in local?

The argument that people turn off Trade, so I must spam in local is messed up.
I see this as grieving another player. Anet gave a channel to you for trades; Anet gave us the ability to turn off that channel. By spamming in local, you keep the right use the trade channel, while denying me the right to ignore it.

The ultimate solution for this is to just go ahead and give me the ability to ban people.
I’d correct all of the chat problems fairly quickly, as I believe very strongly the best way to jump start a stubborn fark-wads IQ, is by giving them a swift hard kick in the pants every time they mess up.

Funny, I never had to kick some one more than twice…

I actually use it in Missions or when I'm with a party. I use all the channels, depending on how many professions there are in the party.

I usually have the elementalists/mesmers talk or report on the Trade channel.

So I want to keep it.

Also, with the merchs, and storage in the Guild Hall - I'm very rarely in any of the towns anymore.

I'm trying to make a point that filters will not work

Oh, you will need to describe exactly guild wars will decide if a text string will be blocked or not for it to be implemented. If you dont provide enough details for someone else to follow then and say with 100% accuracy if a message will be blocked or not, you haven't shown enough infomation for it to be implementable.

Then I will show how the filters wont help be eaither showing how they can bypass the filter and/or I will show how the filter can trigger on legit chat.

Say you block "wts". Then you get "w t s" spam. Block that, and the spammers stick other character in between. So you set the filter to block it if it containts the characters "wts" in that order no matter what is inbetween. Then you will also block things like:
"what are you guys up to ?"
And you will also get "wtś" spam.

Enough people use the trade chat as to not overwhelm the regular chat.

Yes, many people use Local Chat for selling (I do.. sry ), but if it weren't there, it would be a LOT worse than it is now.

duh... this is what regular expressions are for...
Ok, if you dont understand, just trust me, it is doable.

Auctionhouses are a must. Not only would it probably cut down on the spam at least a little, it would also help solidify the economy. You wouldn't scroll through the auctionhouse, see a Bone Dragon mini for 900k, and then two items away see another for 200k. The people putting up their items would, invariably, meet in the middle (most of the time). Yeah, you'd still have price gougers (and those who just want to sell quickly) but it would be a good start to making the market a little more reasonable and easy to follow.

Doable, Ira, but only to an extent. Do we really want to the bulk of regexes, knowing full well the human mind will always prevail? There is no definite way to stop trade spam via filtering/blocking/banning. The only solution is to make sure there is no reason to trade spam in the first place (via auction houses or whatever).

human mind is overrated... especially when there is another human mind adjusting filters every so often.
